FAIRBANKS, Alaska. (KTVF) Students and families gathered for this year’s Annual Youth Breakfast on Saturday morning to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
"Salute to Greatness" was the theme of the annual breakfast which was free for students K-12.
The event at the JP Jones Center included breakfast, music, and spoken word. Terlynn Olds from the University Of Alaska Fairbanks Department Of Athletics spoke to the students about the importance of having a dream.
Mahogany Mitchell with the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Committee says she wants the children to understand what Dr. King stood for. "Just stressing the importance of Martin Luther King Junior and his legacy and the things that he laid out before us, as far as scholarship, and just the importance of getting an education, and understanding your rights and freedoms that you have," said Mitchell.
There was also a community gospel and fine arts gathering held on Friday night to celebrate Martin Luther King Junior Day.
