FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) Alaska State Troopers have charged a Fairbanks man with first degree murder in a shooting off of Aeronca Ave. near Dale Rd. Friday that left one man dead. Brian Talbott, 43, was charged with first and second degree murder for his alleged involvement the shooting.

According to charging documents, Clayton Nelson and three associates went to Talbott’s house to retrieve a vehicle he had allegedly stolen from Nelson. They had attempted to retrieve the vehicle the night before but Talbott had rammed the vehicle that Nelson was riding in with Nelson’s stolen vehicle and Nelson decided not to pursue the issue. Nelson returned the next day and requested Talbott give him his keys. Talbott refused and a physical altercation ensued.

Nelson and his associates attempted to depart the area but Talbott retrieved a firearm and shot at the vehicle, shattering the rear window. According to troopers, Talbott ultimately shot the vehicle five times, resulting in Nelson being struck in the neck.

The driver of the vehicle attempted to take Nelson to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital, but Nelson was reportedly bleeding so excessively that they stopped at West Fred Meyers and requested someone call 911.

Nelson was then transported to FMH where he was pronounced dead.

Talbott said in an interview he hadn’t seen Nelson or his friends in a couple days. A witness on scene told investigators that Talbott requested them to hide his gun and not tell police.

Talbott appeared telephonically in court for an arraignment Saturday where a judge entered a not guilty plea on his behalf. Bail was set at $1,000,000.

Talbott has 16 prior convictions, 13 since 2005. He has been charged with numerous counts of fourth degree assault going back to 2005, including one charge from August that has not yet been resolved. He also has an open second degree theft case from July, and been charged with multiple DUIs.
