West Valley and Monroe Catholic sweep Cross Country Region titles

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The High School Cross Country Region Championships were held over the weekend at Birch Hill and several of our Interior Athletes and Teams were able to qualify for the state championships.
In the 3A Boys 5 Kilometer race, Lucas Echenique from Galena took first with a 17 minute, 34 second time.
Monroe Catholic's Landon Nicholson took second a little over a minute later while Valdez's Kalin Woods took third.
In the overall team standings, Monroe was crowned Region Champs with a team score of 39.
The Rams swept the team titles with a 21 point performance in the girls 3A race while also sweeping the top three spots individually.
Katie Bast was the region Champion with a 20 minute, 48 second time while her teammates Lauren White and Grace Hodges rounded out the top three.
There was also a sweep in the 4A championships as the West Valley Wolfpack once again stood tall.
They swept the top three spots on the girls leaderboard, with Kendall Kramer repeating as champion with a 19 minute 15 second effort, while Naomi Bailey and Maggie Druckenmiller finishing in second and third.
The Boy's races saw Ari Endestad take the region title for West Valley, winning in 17 minutes and 32 seconds.
Lathrop's Baird Reynolds was right on his tail, finishing just 4 second later, while Jack Cater rounded out the top three.
The State Championships will be held down in Anchorage this Friday and Saturday.
