FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The latest installment of the cross-town rivalry between the West Valley Wolfpack and Lathrop Malemutes was a Mid Alaska Conference Volleyball game at Lathrop High School last night.
Although the Malemtues were able to secure the first set, the Pack rallied to win three in a row and keep their perfect conference record alive.
Lathrop took that first set 25-23.
The Wolfpack responded with a 25-16 victory in the second, a 25-21 win in the third, and a 25-22 win in the fourth and final set.
Kami Steel finished the day with 9 kills and 10 digs to lead the team in both of those categories while Zoey Vehmeier led the team in assists with 15.
Ellen Silva anchored the Defensive efforts, finishing with 8 blocks.
The Malemutes were led by Aubrey Reed and her 6 kills while Harmony Laapui earned 13 blocks and Kelli Fitzgerald finished with 15 digs.
The loss drops the Malemutes down to 4-6 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
The Wolfpack are now 8-2 overall and a perfect 4-0 in the conference.
This team, who has now won five regular season games in a row, is heating up at the right time as we are quickly approaching the Conference Championship tournaments.
"It's nice to know that we have the athletes and players with the mentality to bounce back from losses like that, but it's kind of scary because dropping out of it is difficult sometimes. We just continue to grow and we keep going to heights I didn't know we would get to. I'm just excited to see where we go. I'm excited to see how we're progressing throughout the season but other teams are going to be progressing at the same time, so we just have to be ready for anything," said Silva.
West Valley will have a chance to keep their conference record unblemished when they host the North Pole Patriots tonight.
