West Valley Senior earns Gatorade Player of the Year in Track & Field

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Gatorade Player of the Year is a prestigious award recognizing high school student athletes for their outstanding performances both on the field and in the classroom.

West Valley Senior Terrel Johnson has been named the 2018-2019 Alaska Gatorade Player of the Year in boys track and field, the first track and field athlete from West Valley to earn the award.

Johnson won three individual events at the state championships in May. He placed first in the the high jump with a height of 6 foot 3 inches, the long jump measuring in at 21 feet and 3.5 inches, while taking the crown in the 300-meter hurdles. Johnson also ran the second leg in West Valley's 4x200 championship relay performance.

Gatorade gives the winners the opportunity to award a $1,000 grant to a local or national youth sports organization of their choice.

Johnson has signed a national letter of intent to Colorado State University Pueblo, where he will compete in track and field starting this fall.
