FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) Week 5 of high school football is here and it is hard to believe we are already halfway through the regular season.
We are reaching the back end of the schedule, which means, it is time for conference games.
Barrow @ Monroe
The matchup between the visiting Barrow Whalers and the Monroe Catholic Rams has been canceled.
Unfortunately, the Rams do not have enough healthy players to suit up against the Whalers Friday night.
Monroe has 15 players on their roster, but only 11 were available for this week's game, and the Rams decided to ultimately forfeit their conference opener. The game was originally scheduled for 6 p.m. in Fairbanks. The Rams drop to 2-2, while Barrow improves to 3-1 after the forfeit.
Monroe is hopeful they'll have enough players to take the gridiron next weekend against the Ketchikan Kings.
Lathrop @ Soldotna
Over in Division II, all three Interior teams are on the road.
The Lathrop Malemutes have a very tough test this weekend against the 7-time defending State Champion, Soldotna Stars.
It is a clash between two of the best teams in DII, as the Stars and Malemtues are ranked Number 1 and Number 2 in the Alaska Coaches Week 5 Poll respectively. Lathrop fell to Service last week 51-20, while Soldotna tested their talent outside of the state. The Stars traveled to California and beat up on Christian High School 42-7 in San Diego, proving once again we are witnessing one of the greatest Alaska high school football programs of all-time. The heavyweight matchup is set for 6 p.m. in Soldotna.
North Pole @ Palmer
Sticking in DII, the North Pole Patriots have their first conference test on Friday.
The Patriots will travel to the Mat-Su Valley to face a Railbelt Conference opponent, in the Palmer Moose.
North Pole is coming off of a theatrical win over Kenai, snapping a 12-game losing streak, and getting back in the win column for the first time in nearly two years.
The Patriots, who snuck into the coach's poll at number 5 this week, now look to use that momentum into Friday's game. The Moose, who are ranked number three in the poll, shutout Kodiak 47-0 last week. The game is set for 7 p.m. in Palmer Friday night.
West Valley @ Kenai
In the third Division II matchup, West Valley looks to pick up its first win of the season.
The Wolfpack will hit the road and travel to the Peninsula to face the Kenai Kardinals on Saturday. The Wolfpack are coming off a deflating loss where they blew a 22-point lead to Eagle River, dropping the contest in the final minutes. The good news for the Wolfpack is they're facing Kenai, who just gave North Pole their first win in quite some time, but the win certainly won't come easy. It is an important game for West Valley, who could use this game to prepare themselves for their conference schedule coming up, as their final three games of the season are all against Railbelt Conference opponents. Their matchup with Kenai is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Redington @ Eielson
Due to the cancellation of Monroe's game, there is one high school football game in the Interior.
That matchup comes when the Redington Huskies and the Eielson Ravens go at it in an Aurora Conference battle.
The undefeated Ravens, who are ranked second in Division III, are coming off a 53-6 gashing over the Valdez Buccaneers.
Both the offense and the defense have impressed throughout their 3-0 showing this year, and they'll be put to the test with a tough conference matchup Saturday.
The game is set to kick off at 1 p.m. in Eielson.
