FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) We’ll start tonight with UAF Volleyball, who met a goliath in the Western Washington Vikings last night
There are no 'easy' matchups on the Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball slate, but UAF is in the midst of one of their toughest portions of conference play.
The Nanooks brought the number two nationally-ranked Western Washington Vikings to the Patty Center Thursday for a GNAC battle.
The undefeated Vikings (17-0, 9-0 GNAC) controlled UAF for three sets, sweeping the Nanooks and claiming their 22nd consecutive win over the Blue and Gold.
UAF put up a fight in every set, taking the last set to extra points (27-25), but the undefeated Vikings proved to strong, and the Nanooks fall to 6-3 in the GNAC and 9-8 overall.
"I have always said, and will never stop saying, this team [UAF] can compete with anybody," Head Coach Brian Scott said in the postgame press conference. "I believe that 100 percent and it doesn't matter who we have out there on the floor, we can compete with any team
Lahra Weber had a game high 11 kills, while Cate Whiting continued her 20-plus assist streak, producing 28 in last night’s loss. Whiting has posted at least 20 assists every game this season.
The ‘Nooks were competitive against one of the best teams in the country, and Weber attributes it to the team’s “never give up attitude”
“I mean, I am pretty proud of us doing that, saying ‘hey, we might be down right now, they might be close to game point, match point, whatever it is, but it is not over yet,'" Weber said after the game.
"Different people kept saying that throughout the match, like ‘hey, they have not won yet, the last whistle as not blown, so we can still win.' It is great and I am really proud that we are at this point. I think that makes a strong team and I think we are getting there.”
The Nanooks will look to shake this one off before hosting Simon Fraser Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Patty Center. Simon Fraser is coming off a five set win over the University of Alaska Anchorage on Thursday.
