State Basketball: Eielson Boys advance while West Valley Girls and Monroe Boys fall in opening round

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The State Championship Basketball Tournament officially got underway this morning, with four Interior Schools competing for a shot at the state title.
Our lone representatives in action this morning were the Eielson Boys, who advanced in dominant fashion, defeating the Nome-Beltz Nanooks 60-36.
The Ravens jumped out to a 25-12 lead in the first half and then outscored the Nooks in each of the next two quarters to secure the tournament-opening victory.
Matthew Scarboro led the Ravens with 15 points, while Christian Bolton finished with 11 and DeAndre Ford dropped 10.
Nome was led by a 12 point night from Stephan Anderson.
The Ravens will now take on Anchorage Christian in the next round, who advanced with their own dominant score, defeating Sitka 74-44.
Another 3A Boys matchup featuring an Interior Team began this afternoon, with the Valdez Buccaneeers taking on the Monroe Catholic Rams.
For the first time this season, Valdez was able to defeat Monroe by a score of 52-42
Bennet Hinkle led the Bucs in scoring with 14 points while the Rams were led by Isaac Garcia, who finished the day with 18.
Valdez will now advance to the Semifinals where they will face either Grace Christian or the defending state champion Barrow Whalers, while Monroe will face whoever loses that matchup in consolation play.
And in the 4A Bracket, the West Valley Wolfpack girls suffered a first-round heartbreaker to the Chugiak Mustangs.
The Mustangs defeated the second-seeded Wolfpack 69-66.
Chugiak's Chasity Selden was the leading scorer in this one with 29 points.
Sheridan Blasey led the Wolfpack with 17.
Chugiak will now face either Bartlett or Wasilla in the semi-finals, while the Wolfpack will take on the losing team in consolation play.
The West Valley Boys are still waiting for their first tournament game against Colony, which is set for a 6:30 start.
