FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The Alaska Nanook Hockey team appointed their newest assistant coach yesterday. Joe Howe will be joining Head Coach Erik Largen's new staff. Howe has spent the last three seasons at the University of Denver where he was the Goalie Coach. He also served as the University's Director of Hockey Operations for the 2017-2018 season. He was able to help lead Denver to a National Championship in 2017. They also won the National Collegiate Hockey Conference playoffs last season. He also brings a wealth of experience to the team after playing Goaltender for four seasons with Colorado College, where he is ranked third all time in saves. He played professionally as well, in both the Canadian Hockey League and the East Coast Hockey League. He joins former Shreveport Mudbugs head coach Karlis Zirnis on Largen's Staff. The Nanooks will open their season with their Blue and Gold game on September 22nd.
This weekend will see all of our interior football teams playing on the road. Our undefeated West Valley Wolfpack will be the marquee matchup as they travel to Soldotna to face the reigning state champion SoHi Stars. West Valley is currently 3-0 and are ranked #1 in the latest ASBN Combined Poll. The Stars are at #2. The True top team in Division 2 will be decided on Friday Night. Saturday will see Lathrop head down to the State Capital to take on the new combined Juneau Football team. Lathrop will be looking to rebound from their loss to SoHi last week, while Juneau is looking for their first win of the season. Our other D2 team, the North Pole Patriots, will be in Kenai and will be looking to secure their first win of the year against the Kenai Central Kardinals. That game is Saturday at 2pm. Both of our Division 3 teams will be playing conference opponents. The Eielson Ravens will be taking on the Redington Huskies, who are searching for their first win of the year, and the Monroe Catholic Rams travel up to Utqiagvik to face the Barrow Whalers. Monroe and Eielson are currently tied for first place in the Aurora Conference as they both sit at 2-1.
