Peter Kaiser storms up Iditarod standings to take over first place

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Nicolas Petit continued to hold the driver's seat in the 2019 Iditarod, until one musher moved way up in the standings late this afternoon.
Kaiser was the first musher to check into Kaltag, overtaking both Nicolas Petis and Joar Leifseth Ulsom between Eagle Island and Kaltag.
Petit checked in about 3 minutes behind Kaiser, while Ulsom is still making his way to Kaltag.
Jessie Royer and Matthew Failor will round out our top five for today's update.
Jeremy Keller and his nine dogs are still holding down the red lantern position, leaving the Ophir checkpoint early this afternoon.
We are down to 49 teams as two more teams scratched from the race.
Emily Maxwell and Marcelle Fressineau made the decision to scratch at the halfway point of the race this afternoon, both cited the wellfare of their teams for their reasoning.
