Olympic Committee adds new events to 2020 lineup

(KTVF) - The International Olympic Committee announced yesterday it will add new events to the lineup for the 2020 olympics.

They include three-on-three basketball and freestyle BMX competitions, as well as several events where men and women compete together. Those include mixed relays in track and field and swimming, mixed doubles in table tennis and mixed team events in judo and archery and the triathlon.

Two new swimming events have been added: the 800 meter has been added to the men's races, and the 1500 has been added to the women's.

The Olympic Committee added the events for inclusion in the 2020 Tokyo Games.

With the elimination of some other events, there will be a net increase of 15 competitions.

Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach said the new disciplines would make the games "more youthful, more urban and will include more women."

Despite an overall reduction of 285 athletes compared to Rio in 2016, the committee said Tokyo will have "the highest representation of female athletes in Olympic history."

That isn't the only news to come out of the IOC meetings. The executive board also recommended that the hosting rights for 2024 and 2028 be awarded at the same time. Paris and Los Angeles are the only candidates left in the race for 2024 Olympic Games. If passed, the recommendation would almost certainly mean that each would host one of the next two summer games, with only the order still to be decided.

Bach said the recommendation would be put to an extraordinary IOC session in Lausanne in July.

There is a further IOC session in Lima in September, which was originally scheduled to choose the 2024 hosts; it may now decide whether Paris or Los Angeles goes first.
