North Pole angler holds lead in Valdez Halibut Derby after Week 1

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - It's officially that time of the year.
The Valdez Halibut Derby is underway and an Interior Angler currently holds the top spot. ​
The Derby kicked off on May 18th and there are already three fish at over 100 pounds in the top three spots. ​
The top fish for the opening week belongs to North Pole's Dorris Miller. ​
She brought in a 109.6 pound Halibut on May 21st on the Dan Orion. ​
Close behind her is Anchorage's Rosina Mancari, who is in second place in the weekly and overall standings with a 107.4 pound fish that she reeled in on May 24th. ​
Since this is the first week, the two weekly leaders also hold the top two spots while third place overall belongs to Valdez's Tim Hastings who reeled in a 105.6 pounder on the Redhead on May 27th. ​
The Valdez Halibut derby will be running through September 1st. The competitor with the largest fish at the end will receive the $10,000 cash grand prize. ​
Second place will win $3,000 and third will get $1,500. ​
