Nanook hockey team earns first home win in dramatic fashion

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The Alaska Nanook Hockey team was able to avenge their Friday night loss and earn their first home win of the season on Saturday night, defeating the Alabama Huntsville Chargers in a 2-1 thriller.
The Nanooks came into this contest not only looking for revenge, but also hoping to avoid leaving the weekend series empty-handed.
They drew first blood in this WCHA Contest thanks to a Tristan Thompson goal halfway through the first period.
Huntsville was able to tie it up at one goal each, capitalizing on a 5-on-3 advantage to light the lamp with about 4 minutes left in that opening frame.
Both teams were then scoreless throughout the second period and the vast majority of the third.
It looked like this game was destined for overtime, but Steven Jandric was able to slap one past the goalie to score the game winning goal with only a little over a minute left to secure the victory.
The conference victory brings the Nooks up to 2-8-2 overall and 2-3-1-1 in WCHA play.
They are currently 7th place in the conference with 8 points.
We talked to the Nanooks after the game about this hard-fought series against Huntsville, and how the team feels moving forward.
"You've just gotta keep kicking. And you know it's going to go in. You've just got to know it's gonna go in. And, obviously it went in for us. It was a good feeling," said Steven Jandric, Forward - Nanook Hockey.
"It's great to come away with points. I also liked the way we played. I liked our structure. I like that we put a lot of shots on net, but we've got to get better at executing some of that stuff. Our special teams have got to improve. So, again, there are improvements we can make but I'm happy with our work ethic and competitiveness, how we worked for all 120 minutes," said Karlis Zirnis, Assistant Coach - Nanook Hockey.
"It's great to win first game in here in our arena and I think our next games against Lake Superior State we will keep playing hard and win those games too," said Gustavs Grigals, Goaltender - Nanook Hockey.
