Nanook Volleyball team opens season with UAA Invitational

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The Alaska Nanook Volleyball team opened their season down in Anchorage as part of the UAA Volleyball Invitational.
They opened up tournament play with a 5-set loss to the Michigan Tech Huskies.
The Nooks won the first set 25-15, but Tech was able to rebound and win the second set 25-19.
The two teams traded 25-21 wins in the third and fourth sets, but the Huskies were finally able to secure the win with a 15-7 effort in the fifth set.
Three Nanooks finished with Double-Digit kills for the opening game.
Lahra Weber led the way with 14.
Tatum Upchurch, a redshirt sophomore from South Anchorage, finished with 13 and Kim Wong earned 11.
Wong also tied for the lead in blocks with 4, along with Emily Moorhead and Cate Whiting.
Makena Overbey was a defensive force on Friday night, finishing with 27 digs.
The loss may have set the Nanooks back momentarily, but they were able to finish the tournament on a high note.
Saturday saw two tournament wins for the Nanooks, who started it off with a 3-1 win over Western New Mexico.
The Nooks won all but the second set earning a 25-19 victory in the first, a 25-20 win in the third, and sealing the deal with a 25-21 win in the fourth.
The Nooks led in all but one statistical category in their first win of the season.
Tatum Upchurch was the offensive MVP, finishing with 18 kills while Cate Whiting dished out 37 assists.
Makena Overbey led the team in digs with 24 while Kim Wong and Emily Moorhead finished with four blocks.
The Nanooks then wrapped up Tournament play in a convincing fashion, sweeping Barton College in three sets.
Barton never even broke the 20 point barrier as the Nooks won the first set 25-15 and the last two 25-18.
Upchurch continued her amazing tournament performance, tying for the team lead in Kills with Lahra Weber.
They both earned 11.
Whiting was once again the assist leader, finishing with 24, while Overbey earned 17 digs.
Moorhead led the team in Blocks with 4.
Upchurch and Whiting earned recognition for their incredible play over the weekend as both were selected to the All-Tournament team.
The Nanooks will start their 2018 season at 2-1 overall.
They have another Tournament coming up this weekend.
They will begin the Division 2 West Region Showcase tournament at noon on Friday.
Their first opponents will be Cal State Monterey Bay.
