FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The Alaska Nanook Hockey Team will be back in action here in town for the first time in over a month.
The Nooks will be hosting the University of Alabama Huntsville in a two-game WCHA Series.
The month on the road saw the Nooks go 1-3-2 with a loss and a tie against Denver, and a pair of "L"s at the hands of the Minnesota State Mavericks, who are now the #3 ranked team in the country with a 7-1 overall record.
They were then able to earn their first win of the year on Saturday against Lake State, leaving the ice with a thrilling 4-3 win.
They were able to finish that weekend series earning 5 out of the 6 possible points.
In the opening stretch of their season, the Nooks have faced 4 opponents who are nationally ranked, and two who are ranked in the top three, St. Cloud state and Minnesota State.
The Nanooks will now return home for the first time since October 13th and will have a chance to secure their first sweep of the year.
To do so they will have to take down a hungry Huntsville squad who are still searching for their first win of the year, sitting at 0-10.
Head Coach Erik Largen talks about how it felt to get that first win of the year and how it feels to finally play back at home.
"Oh it's like a Gorilla is off your back. The guys have been working for it and the way it happened. The night before you blow a 3-0 lead then you're able to get an extra point in overtime. Then the next night, you're down 3-0, guys come back and win it in regulation 4-3. It's a gutsy effort to be able to do that and we're happy to walk away with 5 points. It's nice to be able to play in front of the home fans. It's nice to be back in the Carlson Center. The guys are excited, especially leading into last week's performance," said Largen.
