FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The Alaska Nanooks were on the wrong side of a double-overtime heartbreaker last night when they began their playoff stay against the Northern Michigan Wildcats.
Northern survived this war of attrition for a 5-4 win.
The Nooks got on the board first in the first period, but an absolutely wild second period saw the Nanooks lead 4-2 heading into the third.
Northern Michigan then got back on the board with a powerplay goal in that third period before tying it up with only 14 seconds left on the clock to force overtime.
Both teams were scoreless in the first 20 minute overtime period, but Northern Michigan was able to find the back of the net halfway through the second overtime to steal the victory.
Joseph Nardi led Northern with two goals, including the game winner.
Steven Jandric, Chase Ellingson, Tyler Cline, and Kyle Marino all lit the lamp for the Nanooks, who are now in a must-win situation.
Northern Michigan is now up 1-0 in their best-of-three playoff series against Alaska, meaning that the Nooks not only have to win tonight, but also on Sunday to keep their season alive.
