FAIRBANKS, Alaska - As the Athletes settle in for their Holiday break, we're going to check on where each of our active programs stand in their respective conferences in this week's Nanook Corner.
Let's start with the Nanook Hockey team, who stumbled a bit heading into the break as they were swept at home by the Lake Superior State Lakers. Despite that skid that kicked off December, an incredible November for the Nanooks has them sitting at at 4-12-2 overall and 4-7-1-1 in WCHA Play. At the halfway point of the season, they are still in the thick of things when it comes to the playoff hunt. as they sit at 7th place in the conference with 14 points. The top eight teams will make it into the WCHA Championship Playoffs.
Now looking at both of the Nanook Basketball teams, the men are currently sitting at 4-5 overall. They have only played two conference games this year, falling to Montana State Billings and defeating the UAA Seawolves for the first time since 2014 to secure a 1-1 conference record. They are in a massive 5-way tie for fourth place in the GNAC. The Nanook Women are currently 3-5 overall and 0-2 in conference play so far in this very young season. They are one of three teams without a conference win along with Concordia and Montana State Billings.
The Nanook Ski team will be competing against RMISA opponents beginning in January after the US Cross Country Skiing National Championships, and the Rifle Team has fallen out of the top five Nationally for the first time this season. After falling to TCU and Nevada to close out 2018, the Nooks are ranked sixth in the nation. Patriot Rifle Conference foes TCU and Air Force are ranked first and fourth respectively.
