FAIRBANKS, Alaska - A new school year means that it's time for the return of our weekly segment dedicated to Nanook Athletics.
We're going to ease into it and show you when each upcoming sport will get underway in this week's Nanook Corner.
The Season has already begun for one of our Nanook Athletic teams. The Alaska Volleyball team has already competed in two tournaments, the UAA Volleyball Invitational and the D2 West Region Showcase. The Nooks are currently sitting at 2-5 overall. Their two wins came against Western New Mexico and Barton College during their stay in the UAA Tournament. They have their first game at home on September 6th, which is also their first GNAC Conference Game. They will take on the Central Washington Wildcats, who have had a strong start to their season and are sitting at 6-1 overall. The End of this week will see the cross country running season start up when the Nanooks head down to Anchorage for the Skinny Raven Classic. The next sport to start up at the University will be the Nanook Hockey team, who will hold their annual Blue and Gold game in the Patty Center on September 22nd. They will then host the Simon Fraser Clan in the Carlson Center on September 29th to kick off the Erik Largen era. The Swim team will hold their blue and gold pentathlon on October 6th, which will be their first chance to get in the pool. October will also see the start of Rifle season when the 10 -time National Champion Nanook Rifle team hosts Ohio State on October 12th. Up next will be the two Basketball teams, who start their seasons in November. Both will be playing under new coaches this year. The women's team will open their season with a homecoming as they host West Valley Graduate Ruthy Hebard and the rest of the Oregon Ducks on November 6th. It's going to be another memorable year for the Nooks, and it all starts this week at the Patty Center.
