FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) The Monroe Catholic Rams hosted a non-conference matchup with the Valdez Buccaneers after Homer was unable to come to town due to the wildfires in the southern part of the state.
It didn't matter, the Rams took whoever was in front of them and made the most of it, breaking through tackles, forcing fumbles and dusting defenders on their way to a 63-7 victory over the Bucs.
The Rams put points on the board in every way possible, with five rushing scores, two fumble recoveries for touchdowns, including a 40-yard scoop and score from Ryan Robinson, and a 79-yard kick off return for a touchdown by Jordan Higbee on special teams.
Much of this happened in the Rams' 40-point third quarter, that all but shut the lights out on the game.
The Rams got contributions from their Healy players, and Monroe running back Garren Nicholson noticed the improvements they have made since day one.
"I feel like this summer, and all this year, we have been working our hardest because we have so many new kids that we were worried about this season, but I'm not worried no more," Nicholson said, who finished with 129 rushing yards and two touchdowns. "I'm feeling very proud. I want to point out we had a kid, never played a sport in his life, make his first tackle today. I am so proud at the moment."
Monroe now prepares for their first Aurora Conference game next Saturday when they travel to Redington to face the Huskies.
