FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) The conference tournaments for volleyball are quickly approaching and the Monroe Catholic Rams are proving they'll be a tough out when the Aurora tourney comes around November 7.
On senior night, the Rams topped the Huskies in four sets led by one of the four seniors Monroe is graduating. Chloe Maynard anchored the Rams, leading the team with 18 kills, eight service aces and four blocks in her final game at Boileau Hall. The Rams also send off Jenna Hernandez (17 digs), Madelaine Muramoto (12 kills, seven digs) and Lilleotte DeMeritt, who was not active due to injury.
"It's great, but it's kind of bad, all this experience you're going to lose, but it gives an opportunity for the other girls to find their path in the program." Rams head coach Dave Obermeyer said about his senior class.
While Monroe controlled most of the match, the Huskies showed resilience in the third set, taking it 25-23 to force a fourth set.
"It was great, everything is finally clicking and coming together and it is the right time for us to do that," Delta head coach Danielle Schmidt said after the game. "It makes me so happy that they're finally seeing how good they can be when they play as a team when they play together."
Monroe improves to 8-2 in the Aurora Conference and will join West Valley, Lathrop and North Pole at the Service/Dimond tournament in Anchorage this weekend. The Rams are in Group C, accompanied by the Kenai Kardinals, Service Cougars, Soldotna Stars and the West Anchorage Eagles.
