Johnson, Wood claim top spots at Fairbanks Golf Tournament

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - In the women's championship, it was Connie Johnson claiming redemption. Johnson shot 277 for the weekend, holding off Kelly Oines' 281, while Sherry Fisler finished third.

"I am relieved that it is over because I was struggling today and Kelly Oines was really pushing me, so I was glad I could squeak out the victory," Johnson said, who finished runner-up in last year's edition.

"It has been a long time, it took me a long time to win the tournament. I am very happy, wish I could have played better today, but still happy."

Kristopher Wood paced the men's field, shooting a 235 on the weekend, nine strokes ahead of second place finisher Aaron Plentnikoff. Tom Chadwick finished third with a score of 245.

"I was kind of glad the way it finished out, after the second day I did not give myself that much of a cushion but it just ended up working out for me," Wood said, who is currently a collegiate golfer at Southwestern Oregon Community College.

"I am just using these tournaments as extra practice and I love the competition and stuff and we got a great group of guys out here."
