FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) The Fairbanks Ice Dogs begin their 2019-20 campaign with the NAHL showcase in Blaine, Minnesota.
To start the showcase, the Ice Dogs dropped a tight 2-1 contest to the New Jersey Titans in their season opener. Veteran Parker Brown scored the lone goal for the Dogs, with the assist coming from Matteas Derraugh in his Fairbanks debut. Veteran netminder Mattias Sholl had 26 saves in the crease in his return to the Ice Dogs.
Day 2 featured a controlling 2-0 victory for Fairbanks. The Ice Dogs harassed the Maryland Black Bears attack all game, as Fairbanks out-shot their opponents 42-12 in Thursday's game. Rookie Austin Ryman blocked all 12 shots that came his way in net, but he wasn't the only newcomer that shined in the win. It was a big day for Mason Plante, who had a goal and an assist in his first game as an Ice Dog, making his case for a spot on the roster this year. Another rookie who showed out, was Jasper Lester, who found the back of the net in the second period to open up the scoring. Forward Adam Eisele assisted on both Ice Dogs goals.
There are two games remaining in the NAHL showcase. Friday, the Ice Dogs will take on the Aberdeen Wings, who defeated them in the Robertson Cup final last year. Saturday, Fairbanks has a date set with the Bismarck Bobcats at 3:30 p.m. AKDT.
