FAIRBANKS, Alaska - It's that time again, let's check out the top plays of the week in the I-5.
"We're going to start off this week with a goal from the Nanook Hockey team's series opener against Lake Superior State. The puck gets lost in front of the goal, but in the chaos, Kyle Marino is able to calmly fire a shot right past Lake State's Goalie to light the lamp for the Nooks.
We're gonna go to High School Hockey for the number 4 play of the week, this one belonging to Hutchison's Landon Wheatley. In their Aurora Conference Matchup against the Monroe Catholic Rams, Wheatley gets the puck and weaves between two Rams defenders on his way to the back of the net. Wheatley led the Hawks in scoring with 2 goals and an assist.
Now in the Mid Alaska Conference Championship wrestling tournament, West Valley's Shaun Conwell was victorious in the 285 pound class. Conwell is able to use his opponent's momentum against him and muscle him down to the mat. In the next round he is then able to squeeze his shoulders down to secure the fall win, and the region title.
Back to the Ice for number 2, this time with Nanook Freshman Chris Jandric. Jandric collects the pass from Anti Virtannen and fires a beautiful one-timer from just beyond the blue line, right past the goaltender's glove. This long-distance goal tied the game at 2 just before the end of the first period.
And number one for this week is a free-throw! More specifically, it's the last of three game sealing free throws made by Spencer Sweet that secured the one point win for the Nooks over the UAA Seawolves. Sweet was fouled on a three point shot and then sank each and every one of his shots from the Charity Stripe to secure the Nooks first win over UAA since 2014."
