FAIRBANKS, Alaska - 3A Basketball headlined the local action here in the Interior last night, with the Hutchison Hawks hosting the Galena Hawks in an Aurora Conference double-header.
It started with the Girls game, where Galena was victorious in a 46-43 effort.
Hutchison held a lead in each of the first three quarters but Galena outshot them in the final frame to steal the victory.
Galena finished the night with 30 points from three point range and were led by a 15 point night from senior Olga Beans.
Hutch was led by Desiree Titus, who finished with 13 points.
Hutchison was playing without a head coach last night as coach Andy Lee was mourning a death in the family.
To honor their coach, the Hawks were each introduced with the last name "Lee" during the announcement of the Starting lineups.
They also had a banner behind their bench dedicated to Coach Lee.
We talked to one of the Hawks after the game about the emotional tribute.
"We really wanted to go out there and hustle for him. Jump on every loose ball, play great defense, and know that he was in our heart the whole time. We have to be better on defense, talk a little bit more, but overall we did a great job without our coach and we pray that he gets back too," said Jovanna McCormick.
The Hutchison Boys were then able to force a split, defeating Galena 66-55.
These two teams traded leads throughout the night.
Hutch started out with the advantage thanks to a 22-17 effort in the opening quarter.
Galena then battled back to gain a 34-33 lead just before halftime, but Hutchsion was able to outshoot the visitors in each of the next two quarters to secure the win.
That was the second consecutive conference win for the Hutch boys, who earned their first Aurora victory earlier this week in Delta Junction.
These two teams will play again today, and we will have results from those games on Monday.
