FAIRBANKS, Alaska - While all of the Major Golf Championships at the professional level are concluded, there is still another golf tournament to be settled in Fairbanks.
The Fairbanks Golf Association Championships are taking place July 26-28, starting Friday at the Fairbanks Golf Course, before finishing up at the Chena Bend Golf Course on Saturday and Sunday.
The original tournament began in 1971, with the FGA being established and taking over the tournament in 1982.
There will be prizes and separate competitions throughout the tournament.
"We have nearly $5,000 dollars in prizes that will be given away. We have four hole in ones, one as much as $10,000, sponsored by FGA," Kelly Oines, the FGA President and co-chair of the tournament said. "We have four holes closest to the pin, we will have the longest drive, the most accurate drive, right along the competition with the golfers. There are some fun elements that we have added in, but it is a stroke-play tournament, so you are out there trying to win your flight."
Taking the crowns in last year's championships were Shawn Yim on the men's side, while Cathy Shuttlesworth took the women's top spot.
There are currently 32 competitors in the field. Registration for the tournament is open until July 25th at noon. Email email@example.com to register.
