FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The State Softball Champions were crowned for both the Division 1 and 2 levels right here in Fairbanks at the South Davis Softball Complex.
In the Division 1 tournament, the East Anchorage Thunderbirds secured a perfect season with a 14-6 win over the Dimond Lynx in the State Championship game.
East was able to reach the title game after running through each of their opponents in both the Pool Play and Bracket rounds, and then defeating the Lynx on Saturday morning.
The Lynx were able to force a rematch by defeating South Anchorage in their elimination game, but East was once again victorious in the Title game.
Amber Smith gave the T-Birds a lead that they would never surrender as the freshman went 3 for 4 at bat with 3 RBIs, while Glacier Alaelua also drove three runners home.
Daisey Paige spent all six innings in the circle, pitching for the Undefeated State Champions, she only allowed nine hits and struck out 9 as well.
This is the fifth state title in the past seven years for the Thunderbirds who will finish the year at 28-0.
"It was just an honor to be in it and to have the runners come in and to win the game. It was just an honor. And me being a freshman, it was a big deal," said Amber Smith, East Anchorage Softball.
Our lone interior representative in the Division 1 Tournament was the West Valley Wolfpack.
They had a rough start to tournament play, falling out of contention thanks to back-to-back losses to Eagle River and South Anchorage on the opening day of the bracket rounds.
