FAIRBANKS, Alaska - A new leader has taken the top spot in the 2019 Iditarod.
Aliy Zirkle was the first Musher to leave the Ophir Checkpoint. She left Ophir ar about 8 oclock this morning to take the top spot from Nicolas Petit. The rest of the top four are still in that checkpoint. Jessie Holmes is currently in third place. Aaron Burmeister and Martin Buser will round out our top five for the day. Our current Red Lantern Holder is Rookie Musher Victoria Hardwick who is holding down 51st place. We are down to 51 teams after our first scratch of the year. Shaynee Traska scratched this afternoon at the Nikolai Checkpoint. She only had 10 dogs in the harness at the time and made the decision to scratch for the best interests of her team.
