Nanook Women split on the road

FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) The University of Alaska Fairbanks women's basketball team has yet to play an official game at the Patty Center this season. The 'Nooks took to the road for three separate two-game slates in consecutive weekends. The Blue and Gold played their final leg of road trips to open the season this weekend with the Seawolf Hoops Classic at the Alaska Airlines Center in Anchorage.

Friday

The Nanooks opened the tournament with the Westminster College Griffins on Friday. UAF played a rather clean game, winning the turnover margin, but were overpowered on the glass 41-27, helping the Griffins pull away with a 84-64 victory. Three Nanooks reached double-figures, led by Sam Tolliver's 16 points (4-8 3pt-FG). Jocelyn Gandara contributed 15 points and seven rebounds, while Kylie Wallace chipped in 13 points. UAF was held to just 39.7% shooting from the floor, while Westminster was efficient, at 55.4% from the floor.

Saturday

The Nanooks bounced back from their Friday loss with a 73-66 comeback victory over the University of Wisconsin-Parkside on Saturday. UAF was trailing all but about 36 minutes of the game, including spending much of that time losing by double-digits. Tolliver drained a three-pointer wiht 3:43 remaining to give the Nanooks their first lead of the ball game. While trailing by one, Gandara hit a shot from behind the arc with 51 seconds to go, to give the Nanooks the lead for good. Gandara finished with a team-high 18 points (3-5 3-FG), while Tolliver filled the stat sheet with 17 points, seven assists, six boards, two steals and a block. Lathrop alum Olivia Kraska completed the game with six points, two rebounds and an assist in 13 minutes of action.

The Nanooks are now 3-3 overall and prepare for their first home games of the season. UAF will host the Mt. McKinley Bank North Star Invitational Thanksgiving weekend, featuring Chadron State College, Converse College and Lake Erie College. The Nanooks will take on Chadron at 3 p.m. Thanksgiving Day.
