UAF XC Men, Women place 8th at GNAC Championships

FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) The conclusion of University Cross Country is nearing an end, as both UAF Cross Country programs competed in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Cross Country Championships over the weekend

The snow decided to dump in Billings, Montana just hours before the GNAC championships were set to begin. Both the UAF men's and women's teams placed 8th out of 11 teams in the meet on Saturday, an improvement for both teams from last year's finish.

Alex Bergholtz paced the women's team in the 6-kilometer race, placing 35th, with a time of 23 minutes and 45 seconds, while Anja Maijala (24:12.60, 43rd place) and Noelle Resignolo (24:47.5, 50th) also had top 50 finishes. Mariel Pulles (25:38.40, 62nd) and Maggie Meeds (26:00.90, 68th) also placed for the women.

For the men, Jacob Walsh led the way with a 26th overall finish at 26:20 in the 8k, while Lukash Platil was behind him at 33rd (26:33.70).Other Nanook finishes include Jack Matherly (27:16.70, 61st) Mike Ophoff (27:44.00, 68th) and Zephan Ozturgut (28:41.90, 80th).

"The goal for the Nanooks this season was to finish stronger than last year," acting head coach Eliska Albrigtsen said in a UAF press release. "A fighting spirit and fresh attention of our new assistant coach Jon supporting both the men's and women's teams helped us reach their goal and finish higher up in the final standings this year!"

Western Washington ultimately swept the day, claiming both the men's and women's titles.
