285 pound halibut maintains lead in Valdez Derby

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Week 12 of the Valdez Halibut Derby saw an over 200 pound fish for the first time in two weeks, but it wasn't quite enough to get into the overall leaderboard.
Steve Hanna from Emmett Idaho took second for the week of August fifth through the eleventh with the 140 pound halibut he caught on the Sea Quester on August fifth.
The top fish for the week belonged to Kevin Ulrich from Eagle River, who reeled in a 202 pounder on the Dan Orion.
He also caught his on the fifth.
The overall leaderboard remains unchanged for another week.
Fairbanks' very own Russel Young is still in third place with the 226 pounder he caught on the Dan Orion on June 23rd.
Second place was also caught on that date.
Valdez's Doug Cranor still holds second with the 239 pounder he caught on the Redhead.
And Patricia Johnson from Clovis California is still in first place with her 285 pound Monster Halibut that she reeled in on July 26th on the Harvester.
In the Silver Salmon derby, the second and third place fish were both caught on the Sea Duck.
Leslie West from Provo Utah is in third overall with the 16.48 pound Silver that she caught on August 11th.
Anchorage's Daniel Schneider is in second with the 16.64 pounder that he caught on August 4th.
Valdez's Aksel Hutchinson has a commanding hold on first place.
He caught a 17.28 pound Silver Salmon on the Amanda Rose on August 11th.
Both the Silver and Halibut Derbies run through September 2nd, the heaviest fish when it is all said and done will win the $10,000 cash grand prize, second place will bring home $3,000, and third place will win 15 hundred.
