Two women identified as victims of Black Bear attack near Pogo Mine

Alaska State Troopers have identified two Pogo Mine contractors who were attacked by a bear near the Mine on Monday.

27-year-old Erin Johnson of Anchorage was fatally attacked by the black bear, while 38-year-old Ellen Trainor of Fairbanks sustained minor injuries in the attack.

The two victims were approximately 5 miles away from Pogo Mine, collecting geological samples for ABR Inc., when they noticed a black bear about ten feet away.

Reports indicate that the bear was acting 'hyper-aggressive' during the attack, and was unfazed when the two women used bear spray to try and stop the bear.

Both women were highly trained in bear safety in awareness. The black bear was later killed by authorities.
