FAIRBANKS, Alaska Kids are out of the classrooms for the summer, but can benefit from the cafeteria throughout June, thanks to The Fairbanks North Star Borough School District's 'Nutrition Services Summer Food Program'
The program, which was established by the Federal Government, offers two free meals per day to children 18 years and younger at Ryan Middle School.
The School District serves lunch to nearly 200 children daily, and has made an impact on local families.
"I think what it means to them, is it takes some stress off of them," Amy Rouse, the Director of Nutrition Services said. "A lot of our families rely on breakfast and lunch during the school year, and so providing breakfast and lunch during the month of June helps them budget their food dollars better."
Breakfast is served from 8:15 to 9:15, while lunch is provided from noon to 1, Monday through Thursday until June 27th.
