Sobering center opens its doors

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The Sobering Center opened its doors to the public for the first time today, hoping to provide a safe place for intoxicated people to sleep, especially in the cold winter months.
The Tanana Chiefs Conference held a ribbon cutting ceremony at the center with 'Housing first' Director, Shirley Lee, hosting the event.
Lee talked about the winter of 2007 to 2008, where seven people froze to death after having no place to go.
She said she hopes the new center will give inebriates somewhere to sleep, get a medical screening and, if they choose, intervention referral and treatment.
Tune in tomorrow when we take a tour of the center, and talk to several officials about what this facility means for the community.
