FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) The Alaska Marine Highway System announced their 2019 to 2020 winter schedule, which runs from October 1st to April 30th 2020. With cuts to the budget, the marine highway system created new features, "in an effort to maximize revenue and create a more self-sustaining system." These new features include dynamic pricing, where as availability decreases, the published fares will increase, event pricing where the fare will increase by 10 percent four days before and after at that port, as well as change fees increasing as the scheduled date approaches.
Meadow Bailey with the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities, says the winter service is reduced from past years due to the large budget cuts.
"The Marine Highway System is facing a significant budget reduction, they were reduced 43 million, which is about 31 percent and that does reflect in the schedule. They're not able to accommodate all of the requests that we were in the past. While we worked really diligently to try to meet the needs of all the communities that we could, there's definitely places where there is not service for some length of time," said Bailey.
