FAIRBANKS, Alaska - A portion of the Minto Flats antler less moose hunt, area RM785 will remain closed after the season opens October 15. The remainder of the hunt area will stay open through February 28 of next year, unless the harvest quota of 21 cow moose is reached.
Tony Hollis, the Fairbanks Area Wildlife Biologist for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, says hunters need to remember they must be either west of Goldstream Creek or north of the Chatanika River before they can harvest a moose. Hollis explains why they are closing the hunt.
"Last year and this year we are closing a portion of the hunt area because prior to last year, most of the harvest was coming out of this particular area. So we are closing it to force hunters to hunt the remainder of the hunt area and kind of spread the harvest out," he said.
