NANOOK CORNER: A closer look at the WCHA Rookie of the Month Steven Jandric

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - For this week's edition of Nanook Corner, we take a closer look at October's WCHA Rookie of the Month.
Hockey season is only a month old but the Nanooks already have some hardware as Freshman Forward Steven Jandric was named the WCHA Rookie of the Month last week. October was a solid month for Jandric as he was also named the Rookie of the Week on October 23rd for his efforts against the UAA Seawolves. This is the first time a Nanook player has earned the award since Andy Taranto in 2010, and that was in the CCHA Days. Jandric is the first ever WCHA Rookie of the Month Honor for the Nanooks.
Steven Jandric; Alaska Nanooks>>: "I was sleeping and then I woke up and Ryker Leer had put in the group 'Congratulations Jannie'. And then I looked and I was there. So I was pretty happy about that, it's a pretty cool honor."
The Left Winger from Prince George British Colombia was recruited to the team by now-head coach Lance West. He had spent the last two years in the BCHL as a member of the Vernon Vipers. In his last season there he appeared in 58 games where he earned 27 goals and 24 assists for 51 points. He also earned 11 points in 12 Postseason appearances for the Vipers. Jandric may be the biggest steal in this year's recruiting class.
Steven Jandric; Alaska Nanooks>>: "I played Minor Hockey in Prince George and I played in Vernon in the BCHL. And Lance came in and talked to me and got my brother up here. And we checked out the place and thought it was pretty cool. So we thought this would be a nice place for us to play in and that's how I got here."
Jandric has created so many scoring opportunities for the Nooks in his first Month on the team. In October, he tied the lead in all WCHA Rookies with seven points. He also lead all the Freshman in the conference with 6. Currently, leads the entire team in scoring with a goal and 7 assists. Tallying up 8 points. His +8 plus/minus ties himself with Kylar Hope and Colton Leiter for the team high. He gives his teammates all the credit for his early success, and knows what he has to do to keep it going.
Steven Jandric; Alaska Nanooks>>: "It's usually the guys I'm playing with, like Kylar Hope and Colton Leiter, they're so easy to play with. They make the game a lot easier. I guess it just happens that they're skilled and we score. And I get an assist or a goal. It's nice, it's great actually. I just have to keep moving my feet, be strong on the puck, and go hard to the net. That's where the goals happen. So just play a hard game."
Our WCHA Rookie of the month and the rest of the Nanooks will be on the road this weekend. But you can check them out for yourselves when they return to the Carlson Center to host the Northern Michigan Wildcats on November 17th and the 18th.
