Military Report: UAF provides fee waiver to deploying soldiers

FAIRBANKS, Alaska The University of Alaska Fairbanks has offered to waive fees for soldiers deploying who want to apply to UAF or take classes online while they are overseas.

One of the recipients of the fee waiver, Sergeant Corey Hutchison-Kreiter, says this was the extra push he needed.

One of the recipients of the fee waiver, Sergeant Corey Hutchison-Kreiter, says this was the extra push he needed. "I was originally going to apply regardless but when I saw the form and what UAF was going to be doing for all the soldiers, waiving all the fees, it really got me interested because I was explaining to someone else, that's the hardest part, getting started. UAF really took a lot of that pressure out of it," said Hutchison-Kreiter.

Director of the Military and Veterans Services at UAF says this was their way of saying thanks to one of the upcoming deployments of more than two thousand soldiers at the end of the summer.

"UAF just wants to make sure that military service members when they are deployed they can take as many classes as they want to have and not have to pay out of pocket at all. So with tuition assistance and then UAF giving scholarship for their fees, they should be able to take as many classes as their schedule allows," said Morton.

Although these soldiers will be busy while deployed, sometimes they have down time that they use to work on their degree. Hutchison-Kreiter said he's going to start his classes as soon as he can.

"I'm going to try to do as much online as I can before deployment and then once I get over, see how my schedule is obviously and hopefully do more classes over there."
