FAIRBANKS, Alaska. (KTVF) Volunteers are important during times like these, and the North Star Council on Aging along with the Fairbanks Senior Center are in need of them.
"It's extremely important. 17 out of 20 of the volunteers that actually are the driving force behind the delivery of Meals on Wheels are actually over the age of 60," said Executive Director of the Fairbanks Senior Center, Darlene Supplee. "This week, I actually lost six of those drivers due to isolation. One was 89 and one was 90, so of course [we're] insisting on that isolation component for them. We're in the process of attempting to reach out to the public in an organized fashion."
Both groups are looking for volunteers to assist in their Meals on Wheels program. Many seniors are self-quarantined and are in need of food, wellness checks and getting their medications. The volunteers will also be required to know Mapquest.
"What would [I] say [to] the community? One, thank you for your amazing heart," said Supplee. "When I travel, I always tell people how wonderful the individuals are of the Fairbanks North Star Borough. If we break down on the side of the road, we're only there for a moment. We still have that family feel here."
