Dodge has served in the Fairbanks North Star Borough as an Assembly Member. Last year, after her borough seat termed-out, she ran for the Alaska State House for District. In a tight race, she lost by one vote to current Representative Bart LeBon. Now she is trying her hand for the city of Fairbanks.
“Our community has stalled, like we don’t have a direction," said Dodge. "In this uncertain economic and political environment, I think it’s very dangerous for us to not have a plan, to not know where were going. I’m running because I think we need to come together as a larger community, not just the city, and we need to say, where are we going, how were going to get there, and how were going to pay for it.”
Dodge is passionate about her plans to address public safety. She says safety was better when the city was pursuing a community based policing model. In this model, citizens play a key role in defining the security and safety needs of the public. This form of policing is designed to give civilians a voice. According to Dodge, the city began stepping away from that model.
“We want to pick that up again so that our community know our police and our police know our community; so were all better served and safer in the long run,” said Dodge.
Dodge says she is worried about what she describes as a recent divide in the Fairbanks City Council.
“One of my goals is to work with the council and regain trust with them, work to solve or resolve some of those eruptions or disruptions,” stated Dodge.
Despite all of her concerns, Dodge believes Fairbanks is poised to weather the storm.
“We need to talk to each other about weathering the storm, not talk ourselves into a recession or trouble. We can do it.”, said Dodge.
Dodge says she want to help bring the opportunity she experienced when first moving to Alaska, back into the Fairbanks community.
Dodge is running against fellow challengers Frank Turney, Lakesha Jordan and incumbent Jim Matherly.
