FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) Stone Soup Café, a local soup kitchen near downtown Fairbanks, now only offers takeout meals to patrons in response to social distancing guidelines.

The kitchen was designed with a walk through line which also allows patrons to use the restrooms, which is a concern in the community with many of the available public restrooms being closed down.

During the crisis, the kitchen is also adapting by offering lunch sandwiches along with their normal breakfast options.

The move toward offering takeout came with the difficulty of securing to-go containers. According to Executive Director Hannah Hill, these containers have been donated by Lulu’s Bread and Bagels, Great Harvest Bread Co. and the Coop Market, along with monetary donations from others will help to purchase more in the future.

"Mr. Rogers says, 'You look for the helpers.' Right? Whenever there's a time of crisis and you're feeling really freaked out, look for the helpers. And that's what Fairbanks has is helpers,” Hill said.

She went on to say, “We’re able to keep serving because of our community, because our community supports us financially, because our community takes care of itself.”

Nonetheless, Hill is concerned by fewer resources being available during the public health crisis. “What’s alarming is that we’re seeing a lot of new faces. People that I’ve never seen here before. We usually have a lot of folks that are regulars around here, and then people that are perhaps more seasonal, people that come in in the winter or just the summer; but we know a lot of the people that we serve. And recently it’s been people I’ve never seen here before, people that haven’t needed our services before,” Hill said. “We have an opportunity for leadership right now in our community, and I feel like Fairbanks could rise to this occasion and really show other cities how we do.”

Stone Soup serves hot meals and a cold lunch Monday through Friday from 7:30-9:30am.
