FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Happy Birthday Alaska!
60 years ago Thursday, Alaska officially got its statehood. Alaska was purchased from Russia in 1867 for $7.2 million or 3 cents an acre.
It was first used as a military district for the federal government and later became a territory in the 1900's.
On July 7th, 1958, President Dwight Eisenhower signed Alaska's Statehood Act and on January 3 of the following year, the last frontier officially became the 49th state.
