FAIRBANKS, Alaska - An Alaskan economist and 2018 Republican gubernatorial candidate died on Thursday after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. Scott Hawkins' family said he died at home surrounded by family.

Hawkins had run for governor in 2018 on a platform of reducing spending and no new taxes but dropped out before the primaries.

Governor Dunleavy posted on Facebook saying, "Scott Hawkins was such a positive force in our state, always believing that Alaskans could prosper, and treating everyone with respect and dignity."
