FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Over 500 students gathered at Fort Wainwright's Physical Fitness Center to learn about and celebrate Earth Day.

Organizers had tables and stations set up around the gymnasium so school kids could learn about being good stewards of the planet. Students could do a ninja warrior recycling course, practice physical fitness, or take pictures with Smoky the Bear.

Garrison Commander Colonel Sean Fisher, and community leaders gave speeches and signed a proclamation about Earth Day.

Ida Petersen, who helped organize the event, spoke about the importance of teaching kids about taking care of their community.

"Having an event like this show kids all the things you can do and we need to do to take care of the earth," said Petersen. "The spirit of Earth Day is individual people saying, I want, I want a better planet, I want a better community. And participating in this event for the kids and the adults is really in the spirit of that."
