FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) A Fairbanks man was hit and killed early Wednesday in a pedestrian hit and run.

The Fairbanks Police Department released the following press release providing information about the incident:

On February 12, 2020, at 12:13am, a citizen contacted Fairbanks Emergency Communications Center (FECC) and reported seeing a male subject stumbling in the roadway on Aurora Drive near Fairbanks Fire Station #3. Fairbanks police officers were dispatched to the location. While enroute to the location, FECC received a call from another citizen who reported seeing a subject lying in the roadway. The citizen stopped to check on the subject, an adult male, who was found to be bleeding heavily. Paramedics from Fairbanks Fire Department were dispatched to the scene. Upon evaluation by emergency personnel, the subject was pronounced dead at the scene.

The deceased has been identified as Bobby Kubanyi (DOB 1/19/62) of Fairbanks. Next of kin has been notified.

Based on the initial callers’ statements and the investigation conducted at the scene, it appears that Mr. Kubanyi was walking in the southbound lane of the roadway when he was struck by a vehicle. The driver of the vehicle did not remain at the scene or make any attempt to contact police or emergency medical personnel. Subsequent investigation at the scene led investigators to information on a possible vehicle involved in the collision. That vehicle has been recovered by FPD, and officers are seeking a search warrant before further investigation of the vehicle.

Anyone with information about this incident, or anyone who may have seen a subject walking along Aurora Drive close to 12:00am on February 12th, is asked to contact Detective Andrew Adams at 907-450-6478, or aadams@fairbanks.us.
