The Fairbanks City Council convened on Monday to discuss, among other issues, their legislative priorities for 2020.
Legislative priorities are issues requiring action at the state level, and are brought before a delegation of state representatives for the Alaskan interior. From there, they are discussed on the floor of the Alaska State Legislature. How the Legislature handles each issue depends on the particular issue. For instance, some issues are legislative priorities and may relate to bills and amending those bills. Others are capital priorities requesting an apportionment of state finances.
The legislative priorities approved by the council included funding for a community assistance program, approving contribution rates for the Alaska Public Employees’ Retirement System, and a new benefit program for public safety officials.
Capital priorities approved by the council included plans to build a new training facility for law enforcement officials including the Fairbanks Police Department and Alaska State Troopers, and replacement of the heating system in City Hall.
Other matters discussed at the council meeting included a resolution to support the state house resolution supporting the issuance of an Elizabeth Peratrovich $1 coin. The resolution cites Peratrovich’s civil rights activism leading to the United States drafting its first anti-discrimination law as support for the resolution.
Citizens were also given the opportunity to speak at the meeting. Many citizens raised concerns about Fairbanks public safety officials not being fairly compensated for the nature of their work, as well as being understaffed. Councilmember responses to these comments were varied.
The Interior Alaska Legislative Delegation will meet with the Fairbanks City Council during the council’s meeting on December 2, 2019 at 5:30p.m..
