FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Fairbanks Memorial Hospital was granted the Gift of Life Award for its life saving work this week.
In 2017, FMH facilitated three organ donors and saved the lives of 16 people through transplanted organs.
The closest transplant center - which organ procurement organization LifeCenter Northwest serves - is more than 2,000 miles away, providing a variety of logistical and geographical challenges.
LifeCenter Northwest representative Codie Costello presented the award to the hospital, recognizing staff for their strong commitment to organ donation.
"It's amazing to see the hope and opportunity that's given to families, both on the donation side and the recipient side and they can go on to become a hero to others," she said.
In addition, Fairbanks is one of 15 hospitals in LifeCenter Northwest, service area to also receive the Organ Donation Achievement award.
