FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Earlier this year, the Fairbanks International Airport received $750,000 dollars from the U.S. Department of Transportation to help improve air service for the Interior.

Funds from the Small Community Air Service Development Program were used for new non-stop service to one of the Fairbanks International Airport's most requested west coast destinations.

San Francisco was one of these top 10 destinations and service to San Francisco International Airport from Fairbanks will now be offered through United Airlines with the help of this grant.

The Los Angeles International Airport is Fairbanks’s largest unserved market, San Francisco International Airport comes in second, while service to Phoenix, Arizona came in 10th.

Communications Specialist with FAI, Samantha Loud said all of those destinations are in the top 10 of Fairbanks unserved markets.

"When United [Airlines] expressed interest that San Francisco was a destination that they would want to explore here in the Interior we jumped on that opportunity," she said.

This non-stop route will begin June 6th, and operate through August 18th, beginning in the summer of 2019.
