The training program features participants ranging from those accustomed to the race to those who have never taken on the course, like Skylar Holman from Texas.
"My wife did it last year while I was in training in Florida. This year she pulled me out and said you're going to do it with me this year. Kind of worked out to be a date night kind of thing, get away from the kids and get a little bit of a break.”
The program meets at different locations throughout the training period, including going through part of the MSR course. There can be multiple reasons to partake in Couch to 10K, according to director Wendy Cloyd.
“Signing up for a program like Couch to 10K actually provides some personal accountability for people. Number one, they have a goal, they think I signed up for this and now I have to do it, so they come each week but it also so much more fun to do an activity like that with a group of people.”
Without proper preparation, the aftermath of the race can follow you for days to come.
“If you have not been regularly working out and you tried to do a 10K race you are going to feel it the next day for sure. About mile four you’re going to realize I should have done some preparation for this race. So that is one of the reasons why we have ‘Couch to 10K’ is to let people have the opportunity to build up to walking or running a 10K.”
Registration for Couch to 10K begins every year in April.
