“It’s a great opportunity for people to come out get some additional information, be able to talk to your municipal clerk, [find out] what it’s all about running for office,” said Fairbanks North Star Borough Clerk April Trickey.
In the upcoming municipal election, there are seats available on the Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly, School Board, Interior Natural Gas Utility Board, Fairbanks City Council, and North Pole City Council.
Clerks from each municipality, as well as the League of Women Voters of Tanana Valley, were there to answer any questions people might have.
Trickey says many people want to know more about the powers that bodies like the assembly possess, “What kind of powers they have, what do they actually do... if you are a city council member or a borough assembly or IGU or school board, what decisions do you make... those type of things,” said Trickey.
Filing for candidates opens on July 15 at 8 a.m. and closes on July 29 at 5 p.m. “One of the reasons why we do the candidate open house a few weeks before that [is] to give you a chance to be able to look at it and make a decision. So most definitely think about it, come out, run,” said Trickey.
