FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) The Fairbanks North Star Borough’s suspension of MACS Transit services, including buses and Van Tran, will not affect the employment status of Transportation Department workers.

According to Jim Williams, Chief of Staff for the borough, employees whose job involves operation and maintenance of the buses will be trained to clean the equipment using CDC standards before being put into action sanitizing all buses.
Williams said the borough’s goal is to have the system running again by Monday, March 23. However, if circumstances change, that date will be adjusted accordingly.
Meanwhile, the borough is unable to offer alternative transportation options at this time, encouraging residents to utilize private options like cabs.
“We're working to keep our drivers and our public as safe as we can. The buses and the Van Tran system is an essential service in the borough. People depend on it for their livelihoods, and we know that. And we're working, we're pushing as many resources as we can as quickly as we can to get this back up and running,” Williams said.
The borough has not had difficulty securing personal protective equipment for the work. To do so, its plan is to first purchase equipment from businesses within Fairbanks. If that option ever becomes unavailable, longer-distance delivery will be utilized.
